05 precedent stalls while driving

My dad has a gas precedent. He has a persistent problem and not sure what to do so I told him I would ask here.

He said he will be driving along at a steady speed and it will just die. Will not restart. He puts it in reverse and it started. Drove home a block and a half in reverse. He said sometimes it’s a block, sometimes to minutes. No rhyme or reason.

Any ideas what I can check?

I'd check spark when it dies. See if it's got spark or not, if so see what color the spark is.

MY guess with limited information is very possibly a bad microswitch or connection somewhere, but could be ignition coil or rev limiter also. but first we would want to confirm if it's losing spark or could be something else (fuel pump or something related).

If you pull the wire off the rev limiter does it disable it? Seems to me I had a DS that did that but would keep running (barely). I think I just disconnected it.

Yes if you disconnect the brown wire ring terminal it disables the rev limiter.

But I would verify you're actually losing spark before doing anything.
