We took off the hub (which I believe is listed as brake drum), and the center is completely wallered out. No splines left what so ever and kind of egg shaped. I'll be ordering one of those tomorrow and we'll see were that leaves us. Is it possible that this is all that was wrong? It seems way too simple. It is the short axle side.
That's it!!! Easy fix.

Next question - I'm trying to order the right part. The brake drum I can find is listed for a 82 - 86. Is this the same that will fit my 79? The only one listed for a 79 says it is for keyed axels and ours are splined. I just want to make sure I get the right thing.

Thanks for all the help.

I am not an expert, but I have a 79 as well and my axles are definitely keyed. I did a lot of research and looking for keyed drums and everything I found is that on gassers from 76-80 they had keyed axles/drums, from 81-88 they had splined axles.

If the cart is definitely a 79, by the model numbers in the front, then maybe someone swapped out the rear end with a newer one. This is what I was trying to do as well. As for the splined axles, I believe I found that there were 2, a large spline and small spline. Again, I am not exactly sure, but I think EZGO used the small spline on the electric carts and the larges spline on the gas. I hope this helps.

If you do confirm the cart is a 79, by the model numbers, with a newer rear end, please let me know. I just posted a question last night in another thread, "old school clutch problems" asking if a newer rear end (81-8 can be used in the older model cart. It seems the 81-88 has the same clutches by the replacement part numbers, so I thought the rear end may be similar as well (exept for the the axles, which should not matter).

I did the look up by VIN and it gives me a manufacture date of November 1979. I guess being that late in the year it could be considered an 80's model cart. I don't know that much about carts. Anyway, it definitely has splined axles not keyed. I can post some pics if you would like so you can compare to what you have.

Does this look like it could be the problem?
I think this is supposed to be splined and round. What do you think?

What are the numbers/letters on the Model on the tag in the front right (near where the glove box would be on a car)?

Either way, from what I have found the 79 and 80 should be the same.

As for the pics, yes I agree, that drum is splined and should be round.

How about your axles, are they splined or keyed?

If they are keyed, then they would look smooth with a key way cut into the smooth surface (no splines).

If the axle is keyed, maybe someone put on the wrong drum and that is why it is rounded out.

the axles are splined as well. The serial no. is 79E22. It may have a newer rearend under it. Like I said, I don't know that much about carts, but between this one and our 92 Yamaha, we're learning a lot.
