Battery question
I am fairly new to the cart world and have a question. I recently purchased a 1999 DCS EZGO cart. I was told when I bought it it might need 1 new battery. I charged the cart overnight and when I began to use it it lasted a short time before the battery meter began to drop rapidly and it began to lose power. I then had an electrician in the campground check the batteries and we found 1 of the batteries was reading 3.72 volts. I then ran to the store, picked up another battery. When I plugged the new battery in the meter went to full again. I then rode the cart for a much longer time but after a few hours or so it began to act up again. I charged to cart again and I can ride the cart for 20 min or so and the battery begins to drop rapidly. I have tested the batteries again and found 1 of them now is reading 5.52 or so. My question is this. From my understanding a reading of 5.52 should be given at around 10% of the charge of the entire series of batteries. Am I correct on this? Should I replace this battery also?

Re: Battery question
A reading of 5.52 is very low. But we have nothing to base it on. What were all the other batteries reading? Also consider that the entire pack may need replacing (how old are they?) and if you toss 2 or 3 new batteries into the pack they will be reduced to old batteries by summers end.
Add to this that the DCS cart has a nasty propensity to smoke (burn up) the speed controller when run on low voltage (like bad battery situation) and in conclusion, you may as well bite the bullet and do the inevitable ....... buy a new set of batteries. You could save yourself hundreds of dollars later. I hope this helps. Enjoy the cart. |

Re: Battery question
The other batteries are reading right around 6.42. All the batteries but that 1 seem to have a good reading. They are stamped 2009 on them. The entire series is reading 38.5 V at full charge.

Re: Battery question
Then put one more in. If your assessment is correct you will get another year or more from the pack. Let the pack settle for 12 hours after charging to get a true reading of what the pack can hold.
I'm not a big fan of replacing one or 2 batteries in a pack. While it certainly can be done you create an imbalance in the pack. Any chance the 2 you replaced were the 12v supply for accessories? Keep a close eye on everything. |

Re: Battery question
Scotty. Yes they were the supply batteries. If you mean the batteries that are connected to the motor. I have only replaced the 1 and the other one that is reading low is the other that is on the supply.

Re: Battery question
I meant the 2 that are typically used to get a 12v supply for lights & radio. These 2 can get drained deeper than the rest of the pack and it will shorten their life.

Re: Battery question
O. No they are not the accessory batteries. Well. I really do not want to the new batteries to last only 1 year so I believe I will take your advice and replace them all. So the cart losing power quickly and the meter is a sign of the batteries most likely?

Re: Battery question
Yes, old batteries have a diminished amperage capacity which results in short run time.
