st-480 stall on hill, hit carb it starts
I have an older ST-480 (probably 10 years old) that keeps stalling. I removed and completely cleaned carb (full of gunk) and seemed slightly better for awhile, then stalled, especially going uphill. Replaced with brand new carb and it seemed good (I think) for awhile then problem came back after a few weeks. 99% of the time it will start running again if I rap the side of the carb slightly, so I always assume it is stuck float valve, but why does it stick so chronically even with cleaning and carb replacement. I even tried to use fuel additives supposedly that lubricate carb. Is there any other possible reason why rapping the side of the carb, after stalling, would cause it to restart and run fine, WITHOUT IT BEING THE FLOAT VALVE? This is driving me crazy.

With the ethanol fuel it will break down the fuel lines and fuel pump diaphragm also check the inside of the fuel tank for debris.

If you are running fuel with ethanol, it is known to erode the rubber seat on the float valve so it may be getting "sticky". A rap to the carb frees it up..
