Default need help

just finished my 1983 Marathon, looks really good, put a new carb on it,seems like it doesn't have much power at all going up a hill, flat ground it isn't too bad, stock size tires, any thoughts as to getting more pull out of it,govenor is removed as well. Also, seems like at partial throttle it keeps cutting out,if I floor it,it is fine, acts like something electronic, any thoughts on this...Thanks for all the help...

FYI, I didn't adjust anything on the carb and I did make sure it would open all the way when I set the throttle cable.I hear a click when it cuts out

When you say finished, do you mean engine-wise?

I "inherited" a badly abused 81 Marathon. EVERYTHING on this cart was rough. After a full rebuild of the engine, I was getting the same result as you. It would run at a measly12-14 mph on level ground, and was completely gutless going uphill. My cart also acts up at mid throttle too. But i'd say its more of a sputter, than cutting out all together. My old dirt bike (also 2 stroke) ran the same way.

As far as it being gutless uphill, I removed, inspected, and THOUROUGHLY cleaned/lubed both clutches to the best of my ability. I used graphite dry lube. Stuff works really well. While the driven clutch was off, I stretched the spring a bit to add more tension, and I also shimmed the drive clutch spring with a large washer. Some will likely suggest that you get the shorter drive belt, but I am now pretty happy with the power. Yes, it still boggs down when going uphill, but not as bad. I also increased top speed on level ground by at least 5 mph. Over time, I am sure the driven clutch spring will lose some tension again, but i've been running it for about 4 months now and it still has pretty good power.

I still may replace my drive clutch with a new comet clutch, but it works well for now. I can take both of my kids, a cooler, and all of our fishing gear to a nearby lake with ease, and the drive is primarily uphill. I'd say we cruise at 9-11 mph on a slight incline.

Before you do anything else, you may want to jack up the cart and run it without the seat on to watch the clutches in operation.

Hope this helps a bit.
