As for not running perfect, what is it doing or not doing? It could just need a good carb cleaning, which isn't actually hard to do and most the time you won't even need any new parts do do it.

I wouldn't think that just changing the air filter would cause the engine running problems to the point you'd notice it a lot. Usually when you start opening up both the filter and exhaust is when you start noticing running problems. Of course, others will chime in and I may be wrong. I have had engines I've been working on and had the filter completely off that didn't idle or run good.

As for the actual jetting, I've not done any on carts, as I have changed the engine in mine.

Oh heck yeah, changing just the air filter will make a yamaha run like crap if not re jetted. To the point of being un-driveable.

Joe, I had a gutted filter housing , a stock muffler, and I'm at 1100 ft elevation, with a 285cc stock motor. I drilled the jet out .042. You jet to elevation and engine mods. If your close to these specs, bet you'll be satisfied!! Plowmans jets arent marked, so you have to mic them.

You make a hard run, (about 200 ft, full throttle, then kill ignition before you lift off throttle. With an up to temp motor. Let it sit 10 minutes to cool with the seat up. Pull the spark plug, and read the very tip of the electrode, (Plowmans instructions).

I don't understand this, so I go (old school) and read down the side of the porsulain for it to be light tan. Not white, white means its lean.

What elevation are you running your car?

Sounds like you need to start at the air filter housing, and make certain there are no air leaks. Drawing to much air, will make it run lean, causing you to use choke to close down the airflow.

Just read your running open element filter, you will need to jet larger to compensate for that filter!! Probably need to go even bigger than .042 on jet, especially if your close to sea level!!

Or past experience with jets sizing
jets work fine should always be used when govonor is unhooked motors running faster run hotter thus more fuel means cooler charge
