EZGO Marathon spark mystery

i can get spark to the plug, but it won't fire up. However, if i pull the plug wire from the coil and hold it a half inch or so away from the coil connection it sparks like crazy and runs like a dream. I fashioned some zip ties to hold it where it needs to be to run and drove it around the yard for an hour or so off and on with no issues, but a big bump throws it off and i have to readjust. Any thoughts? There have also been a couple of occasions where it seems to stop getting spark altogether, but then it comes back. Ideally it'd just be a bad wire, but i know there are several more components involved here and i thought perhaps people may have had a similar issue/advice.
