bench testing a motor (picture)
Can someone tell me what to hook up, where, to bench test a motor. I want to insure it's fixed before re installing the trans axle into the cart. See attachment.

To test run a SERIES motor
Remove all cables from the motor; connect a jumper from A1 to S1. Connect 12 to 24 volts, positive @ A2 and negative @ S2. Swap S1 and S2 to change rotation direction. NOTE: ONLY do this with the motor attached to the transaxle! Doing this with the motor out of the cart will allow the armature to bang around since it relies on the input shaft on the rear end to center it. |

I am looking at a used cart in good visual shape but dead batteries. For $500 I'm willing to take a risk but would like to test the motor. I understand about jumper A2-S1 and contact (briefly) with 12v to see if it turns (as above) My question is -- can I just jump 12v off my truck for this test or is that asking for trouble?

Jack up the rear end off the ground and make your last connection to the end of an old cable connected to the motor. There will be sparks as the motor will instantly draw everything it can from the battery and you don't want to be arc welding on a motor stud threads.

I knew to jack the wheels off the ground but didn't think about the extra cable. Thanks. Improvised arc weld to the post might not be the best idea
 . I might have to replace two of those contact terminals anyway since he says two have the ends broken off. There is enough left to clip to for the test. |
