My $75, 1984 Ezgo Marathon
First post here. I bought a 84 marathon for $75! The guy said it hasnt ran in years. I got it home, took the fuel pump, and carb off, cleaned them up good. Drained the old fuel, and replaced the fuel filter. Plugged the oil injection. I then sprayed some oil in the intake and also in the spark plug hole. Turned it over by hand several times. I mixed up some 50:1 fuel and tried to fire it up on Jack stands, sure enough, it fired right up and has been running great since then. It's not pretty, but it's all mine! This winter I plan on going through the whole cart and making it look decent. I hope the picture uploaded!!! Looking forward to being a part of this forum!

Great find, it looks a lot like mine when I bought it 20 years ago for $300. Now the fun begins, and I do mean fun. With a little work (ok a lot) mine looks like this now

Re: My $75, 1984 Ezgo Marathon
Let's just say, even my wife agreed that $75 wasn't a bad deal!!! It will be brought up to camp this weekend for a summer of fun, or possible headache. But at this point, even if I have to rebuild the engine, I'm ok with it! This winter it will be completely dismantled, and put back together the way I want it to be. I do plan on keeping the same color. I'm liking the 1984 teal/seaglass color. A nice 4" lift will be done. being a jeep guy, I want a canvas soft top for it... give it a different look. Maybe even a bimimi top, straps and all. I do see this as being a lot of fun! I had a clubcar ds 36v in the past, but I've always wanted a gas job.

Re: My $75, 1984 Ezgo Marathon
Guys, I'm reading more about these 2 strokes, am I harming anything by running 50:1? I figured extra oil could never hurt anything more than performance... it's a old, tired engine, that's been sitting for years. Let me know what you think!

Here's a couple pics of the top/cab I made for mine, the first thing I did was chop the top lol. Although I wish I would have went more but I chopped 3" off the back and 6" off the front, then made the soft enclosure. It's cold up here but we golf in it anyway, With my little Mr Heater I stay toasty warm.... The first pic is of before the chopped top, I was given that tan colored universal cab. Used it for a month and it had to go, the last two pics are of what I did. Couldn't find a pic with the doors or rear rolled down, but you get the idea. |

It will clog the muffler up if you take short runs. I’ve seen it a couple times. I try to stay close to 1 oz/gallon (around 128:1) if possible. Harm? Probably not, but you might run into issues... |

Re: My $75, 1984 Ezgo Marathon
I never thought about clogging the exhaust can with oil residue!
Dabble Inn, your cart is awesome! It inspires me to build mine this winter! That is, if the wife doesnt kill me! But she already wants new seats, and a back seat for the kids. I think I could talk her into a full soft enclosure, as it's cold up here on lake Ontario in the spring and fall months. I'll be posting a build thread this winter for this cart, for the meantime, it's going to camp and getting a good shake down. I sure will enjoy just being able to add gas instead of charging up batteries!!! I had a 94 clubcar, and the kids would run it down riding around at camp. |
