They never had a "oil bath" air filter, there's something wrong with yours, possibly oil overfilled.

FYI, I have done lots of valve stem seals on the G16 & up engines. Never had to pull the head to do it. I use a leak down tester to run air pressure into the cylinder (through the spark plug hole) to hold the valve itself up in place. I made a valve spring tool out of some scrap metal: notched a "V" in one end and drilled a hole in it to line up with one of the valve cover holes. Pull the keepers & spring, then the seal itself is easy. For whatever reason Yamaha only felt they needed a seal on the intake side, but the same seal WILL fit the exhaust side & I've had a couple smokers that benefitted from adding one.

Wow. Great idea. I would love to see the tool you made to remove the springs. Thanks for the info!
