Default Club Car with fe290 Backfiring

My neighbor dropped off his club car with a fe290 in it. When driven hard you can feel the governor back the throttle off and then it starts backfiring. If you run it up in neutral this doesn't happen.I have had yamahas stock and cloned and a harley 2 stroker no club car experience. Any input on where to start looking?

Has the air filter been changed?

Also check the governor arm and disconnect the rpm limiters(little black box on the front of the engine) ground wire(should be easy to spot it's on the front of the engine)

Also try different fuel(could be bad fuel).

Club Car back fire issues are normally in just the throttle cable adjustments. Because so many like to speed the cars up by adjusting the cable in the box, it starts to open the carb too early. Check that first and make sure the engine is cranking over prior to the carburetor opening.

The throttle cable was really way to tight, fuel vent was so so and changed out to one of my favorite glass filters. It appears that it would over rev the mechanical governor and the rev limiter would kick in causing the massive backfiring that ensued.Running great again, Stay tuned.
