New project for my son & I
So My son always seemed to be interested in mechanical things, but then never wanted to actually help when it comes time to do them. Figured if we got a project to work on that he may have a little more ambition. So we decided to build a side by side utility vehicle. After much thought and searching we decided it would be easier to get a whole vehicle, dismantle it and make it our own rather than start from scratch. We looked high and low for an ATV, couldn't find any for under $1k unless they were old with no rear suspension. Came across this golf cart and snagged it for $150 :D
It's in great shape, but the previous owner ran it with no oil so the engine seized. Luckily my buddy races a hurricane cart with a "13hp" Honda engine and had some brand new ones laying around. So that is the next project. First I wanted to make sure my son was actually interested so we decided to build a little rack/brush guard for the front and figured it would be a great time to teach him how to MIG weld. Here's the outcome, just have to add the fog lights I scrounged up for driving lights. He did about half of the welding and it came out great! |

Nice work Street. Keep him motivated with the project. No better feeling than to do something for yourself. He'll surely feel great afterwards.

Great looking rack!! You and your son got skills. I hope you don't mind if I copy it for a project cart of mine. Depending on how long it's sat you may be even able to pull the plug, spray in some PB Blaster and work her loose. That wouldn't solve the "why he ran out of oil issue" but you never know until you try. A rebuild of that siezed engine may be way easier and less expensive than a conversion. Although the 4 more horses and Free Honda sounds mighty good. Good Luck!!

Re: New project for my son & I
First thing I did was pull the engine & disassemble it. Lower end of the rod is seized tight on the crank. It's an old flathead Kawasaki and some parts arent even available anymore. We're putting a 13hp clone into. I wanted to make sure my son was interested & would work on it before I dumped money into it. The grill guard/rack is made from a display rack I got form work that we threw out. It's just 1" square tubing. Really not too hard to do. Lots of cutting and grinding, thats all. Still hae to mount the headlights on it but the next project is to get the engine installed and lined up correctly. No one seems to have done it the same way so this should be fun LOL
