g16a rotation lock at start up
When starting cart, sometimes engine will rotate only a partial turn and then lock. I can rotate flywheel or clutch by hand and then engine will start the next time. Also sometimes "fluttering" gas pedal will sometimes get cart to go with a sputter until it fires strong.
Back story on cart. Purchased missing cylinder head. They said they "tightend" the clutch to gain more power, broke a keeper on a valve, and ended up loosing the cylinder head. I have since replaced cylinder head, gapped valves @.004, cleaned all electrical connections, replaced coil, filters, spark plug. cleaned all gas lines, carb, and fuel pump. This is my first cart and I am learning as i go. Thank you in advance. |

Could be a starter issue (brushes, etc). Battery in good condition?

Yes new battery. I can hit the “stop” even turning by hand. Lifter, push rod, valve gap, clutch, rear end? Too many places for my novice mind to know where to start.

First thing would be to pull the valve cover back off and see if anything is obviously wrong inside.

Dirty or loose wire connections, but I’m guessing starter brushes!! (That is; if battery is proved to be good)

Re: g16a rotation lock at start up
update. I regapped valves from .004 to .005 and that fixed the rotation lock issue. Thank you Dave. Ran like a champ on jack stands. Set it down and tried to drive, and the sputtering began again. Starter generator began to get hot and smoke. So now I will check that to see if it can be salvaged and if so replace brushes. Thank you all again for the input.

Re: g16a rotation lock at start up
I was going to guess the starter/generator isn't strong enough to turn it past the compression stroke. Worn brushes, or worn starter/generator can cause that.
check compression also to make sure it isn't "too" high. carbon build-up can cause excessively high compression. |
