Default Voltage regulator options ?

I just bought a 91 G9 it came with no voltage regulator What options do I have in regulators? It is supposed to have the expensive one with the 4 wire square plug. Can it be setup with the cheaper 3 wire Yami regulator or an automotive style that I have 3 of in the garage?

What leads you to say that? Yes they can go bad and not charge or overcharge, but drain the battery? Or are you saying "overcharging" will damage the battery? I agree you could cut the wiring and install a Hitachi adjustable voltage regulator (not an aftermarket one, there not adjustable) We just need to give members solid advice.

It could drain the battery, if it's not calling for sufficent voltage to keep up with draw.

I have a few regulators in my Buick parts box. I was thinking about maybe using one of them.

Would you not just set it 15.5v hi rev and 13v idle ? With lights, stereo and trailer lighting I would think a little extra wouldn't hurt. How many watts does the generator put out ideally?

Ok, but a voltage regulator will not drain a battery, it may not charge it, it may even overcharge it, but not drain it. Just so other member's understand.

Do you have a part number for the Hitachi VR and some wiring advice? What do I do with the extra wire when converting to the 3 wire Hitachi ?
