Default 1980 EZGO Problems

I bought a golf cart for my son and from what I can tell it is a 1980 EZGO, the numbers on the plate are 80J26 214488. First, the only things I know about golf carts are what I have read on this forum. I am completely ignorant about all things golf cart so please keep that in mind if you are kind enough to respond. I can work on cars all day but golf carts have me stumped. Anyway, I got this golf cart running and cleaned it up but after a couple of months it stopped. I determined it was the solenoid so I replaced it and everything was going fine again until about a month ago. It stopped running again. I noticed that the solenoid had burned up on one of the posts and the nut had come loose (my error not using a locknut). I got another new solenoid and replaced it but this time I get a bright sizzling spark at the F/R switch when I try to put it in forward and the solenoid clicks. The cart doesn't move. There are also no microswitches on this cart, I keep reading that there should be two or three but there are none. Here are pictures of it and yes it probably needs new batteries and they need to be cleaned again. Anyway, any advice? This was my son's birthday present and I really want it running. I only paid $250 for it but he loves it. Thanks.

I'm not expert either, but I do know that it's best to keep it simple. View the image I attached to see how few parts there are on a golf cart. Find the missing link!
