BBrazil,

If you can move the crankshaft up and down, and hear a clunk while doing so, i would say they are shot. Also, if you hear a "Dry bearing grumble" coming from the bottom end, also another tell tale sign. Sorry, i cant describe it any better than that. I bet Dave or Steve can shed some more light on the situation!
