Default 88 2pg Rebuild and HEI Ign. Coil Question

I am currently rebuilding the 2pg. I was only going to do the top end but the Crankshaft had some play in it so I thought I better tear it all the way down.

1.My question is should the connecting rod slide back and forth on the crank? And do I have to replace the crank or can I just replace the bearings?

2. Hei Conversion will any 12v coil work with this conversion? Will this 12v coil work off ebay. Ebay Item number: 310389472149 - I also posted a pic of it below.

Thanks,
Craig

craig,
re: question 2. That would not be a good coil for hei systems. That coil is designed for capacitive discharge ignition systems. HEI are not capacitive discharge, they are basic a fast electronic switch which controls the dwell and current thru the coil. I would recommend a msd blaster 2 or equal, its round oil filled for cooling. 2 strokes fire double the duty cycle of 4 strokes, so the ignition coils need better cooling.

It's a single cylinder the coil and module has it easy on a V8 (350) it fires many more times a minute.
4000 RPM 1 cylinder 2cycle 4000 times a minute
4000 RPM 2 Cylinder 2cycle 8000 times a minute
4000 RPM V8 4X4000= 16000 times a minute
thanks

Get the good old 4 pin GM module and mount it to a good heat sink like aluminum and a standard coil for a 1976 Gremlin or whatever...You will have more spark than you will ever need!!

on question #1, yes, the rod will slide side to side and that is fine. you only have a problem if you can find play by puling up and down. the crank and rod are an assembly, have to be replaced at the same time.

what Madoc says ^^ but don't forget the two spacers that sit either side of the little end roller bearing and on the wrist pin. Without these the con rod really will side.

I ended up using a GM HEI module as well as a universal high-output ATV coil off Ebay (total cost well under $35 shipped for the whole enchilada) almost 2 years ago on my 88, and it has proven to be an amazing combination - just (as mentioned above) be SURE to mount your HEI to a heatsink of some source, also most aftermrket HEI modules have an alignment tab on the rear that MUST be removed with a sidecutter (and for good measure, filed smooth) before mounting or the HEI module will NOT make sufficient contact with whatever you are heatsinking it with to work ...

(Don't ask me how I know that, heh heh)
