G21a play in the steering wheel (11 to 1)
Hi, just a quick question before I go in and start taking all kinds of stuff apart...I have quite a bit of play in the steering, if my hand is at 12 o'clock, I can move from the 11 o'clock position to the 1 o'clock position, now, is this an acceptable amount of play or is there a quick fix that simply involves tightening of some screws or are we talking about replacing the steering box, I would rather not do the latter of the two choices, thanks for looking!

Check the tie rods going from the steering box to the elbows by the front spindle...If they are loose it causes alot of play...

Yes definatly check for loose tie rod ends and king pin bushings. The "worm shaft/pitman" steering box assy's will alway's need play or they will bind when turning, unlike rack and pinion on new car's. If everything checks out ok, I recommend taking the steering box cover off and packing whith as much grease as possible. Then with the front end jacked up, loosen the 10mm jam nut and turn the pitman adjusting screw in ( a 1/4 turn at a time), use your finger to turn the steering wheel from "lock to lock", till you feel a "tight spot", then back the screw out 1/4 turn and tighten the jam nut. That will be the best it can be. Hope that helped and good luck with your new toy

Thanks smallblock and camaro, it is definitely not the tie rod ends, it is in the box, I will do what you suggested, will the jam nut be obvious to me or is it something that I will have to hunt for?

Remember, pack the box with grease! This is important!! Pack it as full as you can get it!

Thank you for the advice, worked like a charm, I packed the box as full as I could get it and tightened the nut, didn't really need much at all, I am sure the grease helped with a lot of that, Thanks Again!!!

Re: G21a play in the steering wheel (11 to 1)
Thanks Mike Mac, well, firstly I will be installing a six inch lift kit, I just ordered a set from Jakes, should be here this week, I am going to pick up a set of rims and tires from a local shop, nothing too fancy, but it will look nice, I want to replace the flatbed with a custom body with nice paint job and then a roll cage with some seat belts, she goes really fast!!! I give it six months until she is complete!!!
