My Yamaha G1 Poor Man's Build
So this thread has been long over due. @Danman has been on my tail about starting it so here we go.
I got my g1 off a guy for a considerably good deal considering the motor still ran. We think it's an 84. Our plans were to custom fabricate the entire lift, short of the rear shocks. So far we've got it up in the air and tucking 22s for just short of 75 dollars. On the front end we fab'd some drop plates for each of the control arm mounting points. We utilized the stock arms and just notched and rewelded where the hub assembly mounted up to change the angle to compensate for the lift. We shot for a 25° angle based of @Danman 's Jakes 6". Next we got some pipe and welded it perpendicular on the tie rod mounting plate in order to compensate for the some odd 6 inches of lift we got. We welded on some gussets and it works for now but we'll probably have to come up with something different for more strength. We had to cut out about a half inch of length in the middle of the tie rods because the toe was terrible after bolting everything up. Forgot to mention we cut the shock mounts off and dropped them 6" also. For the back end we planned on bolting up some Honda 400ex shocks but there was an issue with USPS and the lost em in transit. For now we just cut 6 inches of pipe, slid the stock shocks into em. Drilled some holes and bolted em up. All that's left on our checklist is 2" wheel spacers, custom front and rear bumpers, cage, and getting the motor running at 100%. Motor is stock except for the carb. Someone put a b&s carb on it and me and Danman just can't get it running right. When I first got it home it was smoking like a crack fiend so we deemed the project "ole smokey". Since then we bbq'd the muffler that helped immensely with the smoking. Working on getting a stock g1 carb now. Gotta give a big shout out to Danman on this project. Been a great teacher and primary fabricator on this whole build! More pics to come along the way. If anyone has any input or tips feel free to comment! |

Man you guys "CRACK" me up!!!
Looks good so far! I'm surprised you aren't going atv front suspension? It's the one mod I've done that I'd do again without hesitation. Makes it handle like butter! When you guys do the cage....take lots of pics! This is one mod I haven't done yet, still not sure how to do it. But I like Danman's cage alot. |

Re: My Yamaha G1 Poor Man's Build
Where we are at, there arent many quads going for a good price. I would love to put an atv front end on mine, and for that matter find a polaris 425 to drop in
I will see if we can't do a walk around video of my cage so you can get some ideas slo |
