Default Considering Lombardini diesel 16 hp

I saw a diesel Lombardini 16 hp air cooled motor for sale on craigslist. They want $400, which would be cheaper than buying new batteries for my electric cart. I know there would be some alteration and fabrication necessary. The part that concerns me the most is how do I get reverse when I convert from electric to fuel power.

I have a 1991 EZGO XT881 industrial cart. It is a flatbed, and I want to make it into a service cart. It will carry my tools to make field repairs on other peoples carts in a town that allows carts on city streets. If field repair is not possible, then I also want to be able to tow them back to my shop. I am thinking diesel may be the way to go. I have a dana/spicer rear end on the cart, but since it is electric, I don't think there is a reverse without the electric motor running backwards.

Is this worth looking into, or more trouble than it is worth?

Here are some pics.

Thanx

Robin

You need a gas rear end with reverse and some fab skills. The motor looks kinda tall for the flatbed cart shown? It sounds like a great project......

You also need to buy some ear plugs. Those air cooloed diesels are reeeeeal loud. IMO it's more trouble than it's worth.

i would go listen to it run! from milw that engine is about 30 miles away, and 15 miles north of that i would have the rear end that you need to convert it.

Hey Pizzamaker, you must be in Plymouth.

I am thinking of buying this motor even if I don't use it in this cart. It came out of a Simplicity tractor, which is a brand I have lots of experience with (just not the diesels) and I am also considering making biodiesel when I get my buisness started in Indiana, after retirement.

Do you happen to know the buisness in Fredonia who has the motor??

Also, how much (ballpark) would this gas rear end run me? Would it be as heavy duty as the one in the cart now? I want to be able to tow other carts, so light duty stuff is not an option.

Thanx

I also have a 16hp hydro Simplicity tractor. I could swap the motor out of the tractor, put it in the cart, and put the diesel in the tractor.

I'm going to think about it a week before taking any action.
