Re: Jake's lift front end question from Newbie, Steering
Crash & Quad,
Thanks guys, you are a huge help! Crash, I don't have everything put back together. I just kind of roughed it in to see if I was heading the right way for pics. Quad I will try the tie rod from it's original position (underneath). The wheel end seems to be quite a bit higher in this position than it is in the middle. Maybe the taper will fit also. You don't know how much I appreciate this. It is the first front end work I have done on anything. Let alone a cart. Mike P |

Re: Jake's lift front end question from Newbie, Steering
Is it just me - Or does anyone else feel like the exposed tie rod is an accident waiting to happen?

Re: Jake's lift front end question from Newbie, Steering
Nope... But then again most of the aftermarket drop axle lifts for EZGO's all do the same thing.. I'm glad my TXT came with the factory lift that has new spindles with the risers built in... The tie rod is protected behind the axle...

QM, In the first pic, the tie rod is exposed to anything you drive over instead of being protected behind the front axle like the OEM installation... The other pic is the factory drop axle on my TXT.. Both spindles have risers that elevate the tie rod where it's protected by the axle like the stock installation..

Re: Jake's lift front end question from Newbie, Steering
Hey all,
I totally agree. I am a quad/dirt-biker from way back. The less exposed the better. But, there is just not a whole lot available for the 2-stroke Marathons that I can find. This is a winter project to take back home (the fam. is in western NEB) to run around the farm/vineyard/conservation/hunting ground. I couldn't pass for the price/condition. It won't ever really be beaten (have a Yam Raptor for that) so I hope it will be OK with the extra clearance/wheels & tires. I have just been concerned w/ getting the da*n front end back together. Thought this would be an easy bolt-on. Probably would still be stumped w/out all the help from here! Thanks guys, I am sure this is just the start. Much appreciate the warm welcome! |

Re: Jake's lift front end question from Newbie, Steering
Don't know if there is even a factory drop-axle available from EZGO for my Marathon. Lots have sung the praises of the Jakes kit, so I didn't even think to look to the factory for a mod.
Thanks again, Mike |

Re: Jake's lift front end question from Newbie, Steering
The factory kit for the Medallist/pre 2000.5 TXT carts could probably be adapted with a bit of fabrication.. The basic suspension design is very similar.. You could also just weld a "crash bar" across the front of the Jake's axle to protect the tie rod from any impacts..

Re: Jake's lift front end question from Newbie, Steering
If at this time you wanted to do something about it, now would be the time to take the spindles to a machine shop and have them welded up and redrilled from the top but it sounds like a condition that will not come into play with the driving conditions you describe it will be in.
Your doing fine................. |

Re: Jake's lift front end question from Newbie, Steering
Thanks again all,
Back at it tomorrow. Hopefully all will go well. Crash, think I will try to replace the rubber boot while I am at it. I also think some sort of skid plate will be in the near future. That should help with the exposure prob. The rear will be much more straight-forward--Hoping!! Again, much appreciated. |
