Default 96 txt won't charge

I just got a 96 txt. When I purchased it the owner told me it wasn't charging correctly. After reading other posts I tried to diagnose the problem. First I checked voltage at the battery it is 12.87. I then raised the rear end and ran the cart the voltage dropped to 12.2. I then unhooked the green wire on the starter generator and grounded it to the frame and ran the cart again. The voltage still dropped to 12.2. So my question to you all. Is there only one green wire to the starter generator? Did I unhook the wrong one? Also what is bad the generator or the voltage regulator or both? Can the generator be rebuilt?

Hope you did ground the starter side of the green wire, if the v/r was bad you would of had a voltage of around 16v. So it should be the start/gen that is the problem. yes those can be rebuilt, I would recommend doing that cause the cost is going to a lot less than a new one.

Thanks for the help. I unhooked the small green wire from the side of starter and grounded it to the frame. What is it that is wrong with the starter generator that causes it not to charge?

What do I need to rebuild the starter? Or is it something I should bring to an automotive electrical repair shop?

I don't know why your starter/gen is not charging. I would take to a generator shop to be repaired
