Default grinding.....

ok boys new to this and looking for some help. im re-building my granfathers 1982 ez go. just about dont but the finishing touches. im having a problem and cant quite figure out what it is...

im getting a grinding/wining noise. we have narrowed it down to either the clutch where the governor is or the bearing in the started but pretty sure its in that clutch. anyone every take those apart.? i took the cream colored cover off last night but couldnt get into it to examine. any thing i should look for in there? dont want to beat around too much cause those teeth in there are cast and brittle... any suggestions??

thanks. ill post pics on sometime soon too. its an 82 with an 04 rear body on it.

remove the starter belt and hit the gas pedal, see if the noise is coming from the starter, if not, put the starter belt back on and remove the drive belt and see if the noise is coming from the engine

sorry ferrell, got interrupted by kids, lost track of thinking. does the grinding noise come when your driving it? or just trying to start it up in neutral?
if its when your driving it only, look at the clutch thats on the rear end and see if the end of the clutch that is closes-est to the rear end is touching the rear end, maybe your external clip that holds the clutch together has broken, its happened to me on a couple of carts
