G2 comet on a G1 ?
I have in my hand a brand new Comet 9039 I picked up for free. What is different from the Comet 9038? I currently have the stock 3 weight, gold cover clutch on the cart now and would like to use the Comet one if it will fit.
Can I get it to work? |

Re: G2 comet on a G1 ?
I don't know the Comet numbers, but I was told dealers sold the G2/9 clutch as a replacement on the G1 and have seen them on them. The G1 does pull at a pretty low rpm it just winds up higher after full shift. Of course, if you can get a clutch on there with a spring in it, you will be really happy with the holeshot you can get with one if that is what you want.

Re: G2 comet on a G1 ?
The (Nivel) comet part #9039 fits G2 thru G22's. The #9038 fits G1's. The G1 has a gear drive (on the fixted sheave for the oil pump drive. Will the 9039 (G2 style) fit a G1 crank taper (with the oil pump assy removed) I don't know. Let us know what happens.

Re: G2 comet on a G1 ?
In order to remove the clutch I have now, I need a special puller or at least a bolt with 14x1 mm threads?
The clutch I have now has the gold cover with 6 phillips screws and has three weights. I understand this is a similar clutch used on the G2-G16 4 strokes. I am already premixing so the oil pump is not an issue. On several sites, I see you can buy a clucth for the G1 that includes the oil drive gear, but it is not intregal to the back of the pully. Maybe it just slides on and is keyed to the crankshaft by the woodruff key? |

Re: G2 comet on a G1 ?
As you noted, you will need a puller with M14x1.0 threads to get your current clutch off. The crankshaft is tapered like a snowmobile engine, no keyway, so I am not sure how a separate oil pump drive gear would be retained on the crank. Sounds like that is irrelevant in your case since you premix. Just remove the oil pump and gearcase, leave the inside half of the case on the engine to retain the crankshaft oil seal. If the 4-stroke engines have the same taper on the crank as the G1- I think they do- it should bolt right up.

Re: G2 comet on a G1 ?
Oh yes I forgot about the oil gear. I don't think there is room on the crank for any gear the clutch takes the whole taper. Yamaha put the G2/9 clutch (the triple weight one you have) on the G1 later on it looks like according to the parts listing, also as a replacement. You must have a puller, only other thing you can do is loosen the bolt a turn and drive it around hoping it pops loose and watching or duct taping the bolt so it does not fall out and keeps clutch on if it does come off. Not that I ever did that with a sled lol. We had a machine shop make a puller bolt, sure works nice.

Hey Rosati, did the clutch work for you? If not, would you be interested in selling it? If it did, whatcha gonna do with the original? I might be interested in buying it, if it's rebuildable.

Re: G2 comet on a G1 ?
Finally recieved a puller and popped the clutch right off. Comet clutch fit like a glove
and pulls great! I left off the dust cover (for now) and gained clearance to the frame. The omission of the oil pump gear leaves a large window to the oil pump drive gear but I'm going to try to find a seal that may work or I may just pull the pump off as suggested. |
