G16 will not start
Tried looking for this problem but was unable to locate and threads which would help. My problem is that the cart will not run. When it was parked last fall it ran fine but upon bringing it to get it ready for the season it no longer runs.
It has spark and it does get gas at the carb, even if starting fluid is sprayed into the air intake it will not fire off. I did a compression test which yielded a reading of 65-75 psi. I am wondering if this to low for it to run or if perhaps there is a sort of auto decompression circuit which might not be working. I am going to clean the carb next and check all the electrical connections and hoses to see if any thing might have come loose. I really at a lose to figure this out and would certainly appreciate any suggestions to solve the problem. Thanks |

Did you treat the gas in the fall? gas now contains ethanol and raises havoc with carbs. It will leave a crystal like substance that will gum up the carb.
The 1st year it was introduced to gas every boat in our association had carb trouble! Also could be airleak in the airbox. |

Re: G16 will not start
To low of compression reading. Should be 155 to 175 lbs at wide open throttle. First check that one of the accelrator cables is not broken (#1 goes from the accelrator pedal to the govenor, #2 goes from the govenor to the carberator), that couse a low compression reading and no fuel to the cylinder. You caould also have a "stuck" valve. I've also seen valves get out of adjustment (4 thousanths when engine is cold). Let us know what you find.

Re: G16 will not start
Firstly, compression is too low. At 125 psi, it should fire.

I'm banking with Smallblock on this one, with a broken throttle cable.

Re: G16 will not start
Spraying carb cleaner or starting gas should make the engine fire, at least until the liquid is consumed. Remove the spark plug, drop some oil inside the cylinder then take the compression. It should improve, otherwise you could have a broken compression ring. How about the two small wires plugged to the ignition coil? Trace their connections.

I thought the same on the spraying of stater fluid in the carb- should work if spark right? Replace spark plug, clean carb and fresh gas is my "newbie" solution. |

Re: G16 will not start
OK first of all I want to say thanks for all the excellent suggestions. I am going to redo the compression test with it wide open to see what it is.
Now on to the problem, for which I should have seen. It turns out it was a broken cable and once i turn the flap on the carb it fired off and runs like a champ!! Will finish the service and let everyone know how it worked out. One small thing I find annoying about forums is when someone posts a question and gets answer but never gets back to anyone to tell of what exactly the problem was and what was done to solve it. (Just a pet peeve of mine.) So many thanks again to all who helped out. |
