Default 94 G9 ---- Lots of Smoke

I am the proud new owner of a 94 G9 that could double as a mosquito fogger there is so much smoke coming out of it. Any suggestions on where to start? Rings? I hate to tear into the engine if there is somewhere else I should start. Any good suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

Well I was hoping for good news but I'll take what I can get. It will take me a week or two to drag the cart home from the lake house but I'll keep you guys posted on my progress and inevitably have more questions.

Thanks!

When this problem comes to the shop, I alway's check the compression and for a high oil level (does the oil smell like gas?) and oil in the airbox/air filter. If the carb float stuck, the gas will get passed the rings, into the oil and has no were to go but into the air filter/carb and muffler. A good carb cleaning, new air and pre fiter, clean up change 1 qt of oil and let it run (at a low rpm) to burn it out of the muffler. It is a real possibility that the oil rings are gone. When you are "Forest Gump" like me....try the easy stuff first. Please let us know what you find. Good luck...."Forest"

I've had it puke into the airbox overfull and it did not go into the carb, but possible. Usually it is the oil ring which can go and it smokes but still runs fine excepting dirty plug that can foul. It runs low on oil and stops smoking but might blow up then. Sure check the other stuff first always. You can always change the oil and put one quart of 10-40 in and see what it does after some running, if it still smokes after a while likely rings.

My 91 G9 is all original ran it without a governor since 99 and it does not burn a drop of oil, but its getting tired it loses power when hot and hot weather. It will fly down the drive and back then it goes slower in the summer. The sister cart to it bought at same time has more miles on it and it blew oil ring year before last, so last summer we put a clone 16hp in it with stock starter and clutch, it runs just like stock but more power (like double what it had). Doing mine soon here, but lot of screwing around making linkages and airbox plumbing/exhaust. It is cheaper than paying the dealer for a rebuilt bare engine exchange.

I cured lots of smoke with a valve adjustment. My intake was tight (zero) so it hung open enough on intake stroke to pull oil down the valve stem from intake stroke vacuum.

It literally only takes 5 minutes to pop the plug, roll the engine to piston top, feel to see if both adjusters will wiggle at TDC, set them and put the cover back on. Its kinda fun...

If both adjusters are not free, its not TDC "intake stroke" so roll the piston again and you will have both valves loose enough to feel. Just set them 4 or 5 if thats all you have. It's really a cute little motor on the inside.

I am finally heading down to the lake to tinker with this thing tomorrow night. I've got my fingers crossed for something simple like to much oil. I'll keep you posted and include some pics when I return.

Thanks again!
