G9A quits after a few holes
My Yamaha G9A gas cart quits working after a few holes. When I get back in the cart and push the accelerator, I only hear the 'click' of the solenoid.
I have tried to 'cross' the solenoid posts with a screw driver, but this usually doesn't work. I've noticed that when I accidentally cross the small ground post, it blows the 10 amp fuse. After I do this, I can usually cross the 2 big posts and get it to turnover and then keep it running with the foot pedal until I get it back home. Once home, I replace the 10amp fuse, and everything is good to go again... Until the next time I go out, and it quits after a few holes. My neighbor had an old cart solenoid, so we traded them out, but it did exactly the same thing when I got out to the course! I am not very good with mechanical work, but neighbor is pretty handy! Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!! |

Re: G9A quits after a few holes
Hello I'm an EZGO man myself so you can take my advise with a pinch of salt and you won't hurt my feelings.
Now you know it's not the solenoid I would look to a corroded or dirty ground path. You should see from the battery negative post a cable with goes to a bolt on the chassis. If it is anything like EZGO there will also be a ground strap to the engine. I would first remove the battery negative and make sure the terminal is clean. Now remove the ground to the chassis and sand the frame to bare metal. Also clean the cable lugs to bright metal and rebolt it all together. Hopefully that will be the end of your problem. Dave |

Re: G9A quits after a few holes
Wow...that sounds like a much easier solution than replacing the starter/generator!! I'll give it a try...Thanks!

Re: G9A quits after a few holes
I'm not finding a ground to the chassis, there is a cable that runs from the negative post to the starter generator and that's it...

Re: G9A quits after a few holes
Dave is right, but a Yamaha does not ground to the frame, but only to the starter it self. But clean and do all like he said. Then there is a small ground wire (like 14 gage) that goes into the wire harness. It has a bullet connector right in front of the starter, Smallblock says to cut that wire back and put a new connector on it. That could be your problem.
If that doesn't work, I would try putting new brushes in the starter, only about $30. |

Re: G9A quits after a few holes
OK...after searching through a bunch of other posts on this forum, I think I have narrowed it down to a starter generator problem. I've used a volt meter, and I'm getting 13+ volts through the solenoid to the starter generator (even though there is just a clicking sound in the solenoid). I've also discovered that if I turn the belt manually that when I push the pedal, everything works again for awhile.
SO...I guess this means it is a starter/generator problem!!! Now...what should i do? Buy a new starter/generator?? New brushes (which I have no idea what they are or how to go about getting this done!!)??? Thanks a ton for the help!!! |

Re: G9A quits after a few holes
If you are mechanically inclined, not hard. Still not impossible if you aren't, but a starter is around $200. Search "starter/gen brushes". This will get your feet wet.
I would still do what Dave said on electrical connections (very good maint.) |
