Default Slow to crank engine over

i have a 1988 yamaha that when trying to start , it has a extremely long delay before it will enguage the starter (sometimes have to press the gas pedal mulitple times before enguagement)

can someone point me to the possible problem area.. thanks

If an 88 is a 2 stroke, I won't know a thing. But are you hearing the solonoid click? That is a good thing. If not, maybe the solonoid is bad.

Read the sticky at top, "So your yami won't turn over". It will help you do simple tests.

Thanks mike .. I in fact don't hear. It click .. But even when it starts. Don't hear it either ...

Use half of a set of jumper cables and go from neg battery to starter/gen housing, if it improves replace or clean the connections on your ground cable.
Also, 23 years old, You might be ready for a starter rebuild if the brushes are original, but check pos and neg battery cables and connections first, That's free!!
