My first cart and first project!

Like most thisngs I do I do it the hard way. So I have been shoping, craigslist and such. But found this a few miles from the house for sale. Not realy sure exactly what I have here. From the plaque in the dash I take its a '97 model.
I want to hook it up with racks and such for hunting. By the time the deal was done I came out all right. I gave a MF tractor that has been melting into the landscape for the last 6 years an $200 for it. There was some issues with the carger he had been useing. so he gave me a charger that was for an old three wheel cart that he had.
So it begins!!!!

Those are 8 volt batteries so I guess he was running it on 40 volts? That could be why the charger was not working properly too. Oh, your Forward Reverse handle is upside down too. :-)

You need to check the rear end oil level, as it looks like you have a leak.

do the rear top support brackets just jut into the sky? I see none on the front. .

no the chargers "issue" was that it had been run over recently. But he insisted it worked fine It was squashed ! I didnt even catch the "40 volt" set up untill I had it home for a couple days. Out of nowhere simple math creeped in my head

Good base for a project... First things first I would clean up the connections- those look like a fire waiting to happen! Brush on some Vaseline after they are cleaned up to help prevent more corrosion.

What do I need to do to run 48v in this cart?

You'll need either 6 8v batteries, or 8 6v batteries (preferred due to increased amperage and run time), a controller capable of 48v (check your controller model number and google it to see if it will work- if he was one time running 6 8v batteries, it's likely the controller is built for it, but check to make sure), a heavy duty forward/reverse switch (scottyb's carts unlimited has an awesome one), a heavy duty 48v solenoid rated for the amperage that your controller can handle, and it's strongly recommended that you replace all connectors and wiring with at least 4 gauge (welding cable works best). Also, you'll need to be sure your charger is rated for 48v. Best of luck- keep posting pictures so us cart fiends can follow your build.

Well i've done a good bit of work. I put in 6 new 6volt batteries, and 4 ga wire. Adjusted the brakes. Put on some cool tires, lights and a coat of Herculiner. I also removed the bed. I wanted the bed but after checking it out it was way over built and weighed about 275 lbs.

The only thing I'm not likeing is that gps shows me at 13mph on flat ground, I expected a little more. It seems to have plenty of torque, and no problem on hills and climbing out of ditches.
