will a 36v charger charge up to 40v?

With good batteries on a 36 volt system, it should reach around 45 volts when the batteries are fully charged. Not sure how it would work if your system is 40 volts......

If you have 40 volts worth of batteries (5/8v?) the 36v charger will not completely charge them. Over time they will suffer from partial recharging and discharge.

I have 4 6v batteries and 2 8v batteries. I was told that the 36v charger will charge 40 volts worth of batteries.

You have been getting some bad advice.
Mixing 6 and 8 volt batteries is another bad idea.
