Default To Radio or not to Radio that is the question

Getting ready to start some customizing work. My much better half wants me to include a set up so she can listen to her ipod or iphone. I've seen a post that says you can just hook up an amplifier, speakers and a jack in the dashboard, has anyone done this and does it work? If that does work any thoughts on what would be better a radio mounted in the dash or an amp mounted remotely? She said she doesn't want/need a radio just a way to play her music. I'll also be installing a new dash as soon as I figure out this question.

I did that a few years ago. Works good (still). Uses a standard 3.5mm jack in the dash same as the phone. You can get the cable with a modified end to allow for the new slimmer phones with cases on them. Wide choice of amps and speakers. HOWEVER You can do this by bluetooth now. No jacks or cables needed. If I were to do it now I would go that way.

OR

You might consider the Bose portable bluetooth speaker. $199 retail price but sounds great and no mods to the golf cart needed at all. Pocket sized so just take it with you when leaving the cart. No wires/jacks. Plus you can use it in the house or where ever.

There are hundreds of options out there... I helped my buddy put a Pyle MP3 amp in his cart that was about the size of 2 cig packs with a remote volume and a 3.5 jack that mounted in the dash. Supposed to be waterproof but haven't really tested that. Says 200 watts per channel but no.. Puts out enough sound with a pair of 6.5s mounted in 5 liter beer kegs hanging from the roof. Total cost was roughly $125. With today's technology I would go bluetooth as well.

Look into bluetooth speakers for boats.

Wet sounds is a good brand.

Mount behind seat or roof mount.

We use these and customers love them.

Wet Sounds Stealth-6 Ultra V2
Amplified speaker bar with built-in Bluetooth

(Didn't say they were cheap)

There's no shortage of mechless Bluetooth capable head units out there for less than a hundred bucks. You won't regret the installation!

Thanks everyone it would seem like the consensus is a Bluetooth system, now all I have to do is figure it out.

kernel - that is a very clean looking install

Check this out - worked great - CAN'T believe the post is over 3 year old. I beat the **** out of this cart and drive it 5 out of 7 days. that speaker has NOT moved rattled or stopped working in all of that time

go straight to post 16 where I ended up screwing it in permanently

This is what I did
Pioneer 300 watt amp, about 6"x6" and 1.75 thick, under the seat
a 12v Bluetooth adapter, straight rca jacks to the amp, mounted straight to the amp
4 6.5" speakers, 2 under the cupholder, and 2 in a box between the seats
one toggle switch turns amp and Bluetooth adapter on

works and sounds great, no radio or head unit needed, play Pandora or downloaded music off the phone with no cords or plugs in the way

I have 2 6x9 in the front cubby holes , a kenwood receiver with a usb port and a 10'' sub in a truck box facing forward under the seat in the bag pocket with a kenwood 150 watt amp. its pretty awesome for a cart, much louder than necessary lol
