Listen to Cart Around, I went thru everything you described. He jogged my memory, a backfire can break the porcelain in a spark plug. Even though I had strong spark out in the open, under compression it was weak and intermittent. Worth checking!

It definitely quit running, and was just spinning on the starter.

Now you have to figure out if it's losing spark, or gas.

i let the carb run dry , now it wont restart (lol) , no spark.... gonna look at napa tomorrow for a new wire.

do you think it could ruin module by just cranking?

I ohmed coil and it seems ok

so after the video, I could not get it started, no spark.

I replaced module again and it started right up, drove it like 500 ft. and it cut out.
no spark again. what is frying the module out? any ideas??

in the mean time I tried hooking up old igniter to the HEI coil, but it wont crank/start. I'm guessing the HEI coil will not work with igniter?

I'm gonna order the original style coil and wire and try that......

i'm about to push this thing over a cliff....

The module has to have a heatsink and the special grease on the back to keep it cool.
Regular grease can work but it is not the best.
It has to fit tightly to the heatsink, no gaps.
Without them it will overheat and fry in seconds.

I used a big heatsink from a pc cpu on mine.
Drilled little holes for the align tabs and 2 for the mount bolts.
A piece of paper works to copy the holes to the heatsink.

So I put the new module in with the new aluminum mount. Good news it stayed running. But after driving it , it seemed to have minimum power. I tried changing pulser wires.
What else would give it not alot of power?
I'm going to check timing again now that I have spark.

Timing definitely check it.
Another common issue,
Pull the muffler turn it over by hand and look into the exhaust port,
make sure you do not see a square hole in the piston.
If you do the piston is in backwards.

today I checked the timing, it seemed to be a little retarded, so I took flywheel off again and advanced it some, I put just the flywheel on and drove around yard , it seemed better, but not great.
I put the timing so the mark was a little to the right of the case mark.
I can the engine up to 7000 rpm or more at times while up on a jack.
when 2 people sit in it, it seems like a dog

After a few adjustments and road tests, nothing spectacular happening.
It almost seems to be starving for fuel at times.

Question should fuel filter constantly have fuel in it? while running it will empty filter but still run, and then a few minutes after stopped driving, the filter will fill up 1/2 way or so.

Also do you think all the HEI modules will be the same?
