'84 EZGO gas cart fires in reverse but not forward

This 1984 gas EZGO was running fine, but the last time I had it out it stopped firing reliably in forward. It always clicks then fires in reverse, but it only clicks in forward. Every once in a while it fires in forward, but not predictably, and it may have stopped altogether.

So it does not crank over at all in forward, or it cranks and does not start?

If it fails to crank check the starter generator brushes. Probably worn and need replaced.

It doesn't crank over at all in forward. I'll check the brushes this weekend. How would the starter brushes affect forward and reverse differently?

I assume it's because there are multiple sets of brushes in the unit. I'm brand new to these, but by looking at mine it seems that they may have separate brushes for each direction. One set for forward, one set for reverse. As expected, forward gets used a lot more, so those may have worn more than the reverse set.

I took the starter generator apart. The brushes were close to even with top of the brush guide, but they seemed to be long enough to have good contact with the commuter bars. I'm going to change them since I have the thing apart and se if that helps. Maybe the brushes are short enough that the spring tension is getting light.

I swapped out the brushes, and it seems to have done the trick. It fires every time in forward. Thanks for the pointers.
