Default oil to top end g14

New here and to golf carts. I have a G14 that smokes constantly, more so at first start up. I removed the valve cover to see if its a possible valve seal. decided to run it with valve cover off and noticed very little if any oil was coming to the top. Is this normal or maybe vacuum from the engine helps draw it up with the cover on.

Normal, and smoke is due to bad rings.

I think the G14 engine is basically the G9 engine, the G16 had the next model drivetrain in it but same cart as G14. Anyway usually that means the oil rings are toast. They run ok but the oil ring gives up first and they just burn oil all the time. So you can put rings in, rebuilt it, swap a different engine into it.

Not a lot of oil goes up there, but enough it seems as its not an issue.

Just remember the G 14 has a larger bore than the earlier engines . Piston, rings and head gasket are G 14 only along with the flywheel and ignition system. Also please note on the cart itself the 95 uses the earlier G2 type parts and the 96 uses the G16 items. Learned some of that the hard way.

Which type of g2 parts, are you referring to the ignition system?

There is a sticky for yamahas under engine swaps in this section where small block 450 explains which ignition and flywheel goes where.

Gotcha. Don't have any running issues except for the smoking but will keep that in mind.

You can also look on tntgolf site, it has a breakdown of the yamaha parts so you can identify what ones you have. It sure looks like the G16 was not ready, they patched the G14 together with old stuff and new body for 2 years until it was. IIRc the newer g16 engine has a self powered mag coil like lawn engines, the G9 uses the ignitor/pickup/coil powered by 12v. That usually means the flywheel is different for each, the mag uses a big magnet the ignitor does not.

Would it be ok if lots of oil flowed to the top end, and like you had a oil pump pumping it up there?
