Battery terminal leaning
My wife and I went and played a couple of holes after she came in from school, I had already come in from the shop and we went to play. After the few holes we decided to go back home[ that is a joy of being 4 min from the cart shed to the house] I raised the seat and the battery terminal on the front battery that goes to the controller was leaning a little bit. I grabbed my 9/16ths wrench then thought better of it. This battery does not have a car type post under the stud like some I have had in the past so aside from a new battery what is a man to do. I really don't want a set right now[my wallet is very thin]I know it is best to change the whole set as a set but how much efficiency do you really lose by just changing one in a set, or is that a thing started by batterY companies to help sales? thanks Jim

Re: Battery terminal leaning
You can put 1 in a set anytime. THe reason they tell you not to do so is because the new battery will quickly be reduced to the quality of the old batteries..... So the risk you run with an older pack is adding one or 2 new batts now and then in a years time when the whole pack dies, you need 6 new not 4 like you may have hoped you would need... Got it?

Re: Battery terminal leaning
Understood. Thanks, I'm gonna drill and tap the post and install a stud on it. I saw this on here in the sticky and the other post you and some others had shared. I had the same Idea before I came home and started typing in a rant. Jim

Re: Battery terminal leaning
Yep I would try to repair it. And yes, it is certainly better to replace them all at once.

Or you could check around and see if you could find a used one about the same age and condition as your pack. I've tried the drill and tap thing, I didn't have much luck with it.

Re: Battery terminal leaning
Drill and tap worked great for me going strong for two years now since I did it.

http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/batte...nal-repair.php You can buy a tap set at Home Depot from DeWalt that comes with tap and the correct drill. HD only sells 1" set screws with allen head though and didn't find any at Lowes. I purchased mine online. If you have no luck and it's OK with BGW PM me and I could sell a couple to you for a buck a piece. |

Re: Battery terminal leaning
FWIW: The stud type battery terminals are the embodiment of Murphy's Law.
Too loose results in melted battery posts and too loose results in melted battery posts. The stud is actually a stainless steel hex head bolt with the head embedded in the lead battery post. Lead is relatively soft and deforms easily, so if too much torque is applied to the nut holding the cable on, the head of the bolt will twist bit in the lead, which results in a poor contact and eventually a battery post meltdown. The torque spec on the ELPT (Embedded Low Profile Terminal) and EHPT is only 95-105 lb/in (7.9-8.75 lb/ft), so use a short handled wrench. |
