MELTED... Battery Terminal
I have an 85 CC upgraded to V-Glide Controller system 36v that one of my battery terminals got so hot that the terminal came completely out of the battery and melted another hole in the plastic.
Possible causes? Hopefully just the terminal and lug became loose and created the high amp and heat. Is there anything else I should look at or suspect? |

Re: MELTED... Battery Terminal
One of two things:
Either the terminal was loose on the battery post, or a poor crimp connection on the terminal to cable would be my guess. |

Re: MELTED... Battery Terminal
Usually a loose connection will cause that...

Re: MELTED... Battery Terminal
Anything that caused resistance (and excessive heat) in the hookup to that battery. It could be a bad cable, bad crimp, or a poor connection (loose or corroded) to the battery.

Re: MELTED... Battery Terminal
Mine was caused by a loose connection, but with the help of the masterminds on this forum, it's been repaired and running fine, without the need for a replacement battery.

Re: MELTED... Battery Terminal
unfortunately the hot cable end melted another hole in the top of the battery, so I don't think I can just re-tap the terminal.

Re: MELTED... Battery Terminal
If there is another hole in the battery, and it is not down to the water level, you could try and patch it with some epoxy putty. Just make sure to clean and dry the case good. Use a little sandpaper to rough up the casing surface and apply the putty after following the proper mixing instructions. This stuff is like steel when it hardens and will resist the acid in the batteries. This is may or may not work, but for around $7.00 it's worth a try. A used battery will probably run $40.00 and a new one around $100.00.
