Default 85w-140 diff lube is noisier?

On Saturday I changed out the factory differential lube on my ‘17 2Five with Mobillube 85w-140.

The old fluid looked good and I meticulously kept everything clean during the service and re-filled with 25 oz.

Now the diff has slightly more gear whine, particularly for the first 1/4 mile or so, then it’s almost as quiet as before.

The factory lube was definitely thinner than the 85w-140. So I expected it would be quieter now and not louder.

It was cold (in the 40’s) so I’m guessing the thicker viscosity must have something to do with it?

Has anyone experienced this?

Nothing to be worried about, right?

That's some heavy gear oil for a golf cart.

I wouldn't stray from what the factory recommends and a cart as new as yours shouldn't have needed an oil change.

The cart is 20 months and 600 miles so probably a bit early.

But I read several places here that 85W-140 was a correct choice:

I hope you put 2oz of Friction Modifier in, that could cause the noise your hearing.

2five does not have Posi, friction modifier not needed.

So what is the correct fluid to use? I see so many conflicting posts.

Bump!

No recommendations?

Maybe I’ll try AMSOIL severe gear oil 75w-90

That sounds like a great choice. I would go with gear oil, not that thin "424 tractor fluid" specified on early Rxv.

Today it was in the 80’s and the gear whine was complete gone. I’m thinking the 75w90 might keep the gear whine quiet at the cooler temps that making the 75w-140 noisy.

I’ll follow up with the results.
