Re: Removing steering wheel
Loosen the steering column bolt and back it off til the top of the steering column meets the end of nut flush. Grab a big hammer, place knees with pressure under steering wheel and hit the nut. One hard blow will loosen the steering wheel.

Re: Removing steering wheel
Put your feet on the dash and push up with your knees.

Re: Removing steering wheel
This is the method I used. Sometimes takes a couple smacks, but have always gotten them off.

Re: Removing steering wheel
I've beat the crap out of it with a standard hammer and/or rubber mallet on the nut (to the point I think I may need to buy a new nut), on the back of the wheel, etc.. It won't move. Going to try to find some kind of a puller this weekend.

Re: Removing steering wheel
So it looks like AutoZone has a loan a tool program where you pay a deposit, and get it all back on return.
I can get one of the following: Jaw Gear Puller (http://www.autozone.com/loan-a-tools...achment-puller) Timing Gear Puller (http://www.autozone.com/loan-a-tools...set/555508_0_0) Steering Wheel Puller (http://www.autozone.com/loan-a-tools...set/555516_0_0) Does anyone have a recommendation of which one to try first? |

Re: Removing steering wheel
Were you pushing up on the back of the wheel with your knees when you smacked it? I use the dash for my feet and do sort of a calf raise on the wheel then hit the nut. I've had some stubborn ones, but always got lucky enough to have them pop loose.

Re: Removing steering wheel
Here are some suggestions for Club Car, EZGO may have some sort of set screw.
They can be a pain or they may just pop off easy. Mine I will have to cut off. Quote:

Re: Removing steering wheel
I would go with the first one in your tool rental list.
Make sure you soak it with some penetrating oil first (sure you've used a can by now.) Back the nut out so that the center pin of the puller has a saddle to sit in. Tighten that down as much as you dare. If it pops off great, if not leave it alone and go have a beer. Sometimes between the oil and the constant pressure all of a sudden you'll hear a bang and the puller will have won the battle. As a side note, sometimes a four way tire breaker will fit on those pullers. Put it on with a wrench first, if the first beer doesn't do it, get the four way and give it another twist. Then have another beer. All of the above assumes no set screw. |
